Accommodation & Food

The number of people sharing a room can vary depending on the resort and your assigned accommodation. Generally, rooms are set up for between 2 to 4 people, with enough space and storage – even when there are 4 people sharing.

If you’re in a room designed for 4, it might start with 3 people, and a 4th person might join during peak season when things get busier. Don’t worry – we make sure the room is comfortable and suitable for everyone, so you’ll have the space you need to settle in.

Remember, the accommodation is designed to be functional and comfortable for staff, and it’s a great way to meet your teammates and enjoy the social side of living and working in Croatia, Greece or Sardinia.

We can’t guarantee cooking facilities in all our staff accommodation (unless you're working at Cosmos Beach Club, where you’ll have access to cooking facilities). Let’s be real—between work and play, we don’t expect you to spend much time in the kitchen! When sourcing accommodation near our resorts, it can be tricky to find places with full cooking setups, but we always try to offer some basic facilities. At the very least, you’ll have a fridge and a kettle to brew a cuppa!

If you have any serious concerns about not having cooking facilities for any reason, please reach out to your line manager. They’ll be happy to discuss your needs and see if any arrangements can be made.

At Cosmos Beach Club, we don’t have the ability to provide staff meals, so instead, we offer a monthly food contribution in your wages. While we don’t expect it to cover everything you eat in a month, it does contribute a large portion towards your food costs.

It’s a great help to make your meals more affordable, but you will need to think a bit about budgeting when it comes to food.

It depends on the resort, but generally, staff accommodation is off-site. In some resorts, there’s one main block of apartments where most staff stay, while in others, you’ll find various apartments scattered around the local village or on the outskirts. The farthest you’ll have to walk is approximately 30-35 minutes, but don’t worry, if it’s further than that, we’ve got you covered with a bike or transport to make your journey easier.

Living off-site has its perks – it’s a nice break from being "on" and in guest mode all the time. Plus, imagine walking along the beautiful coastline or through olive groves to get to work. Not a bad way to start the day!

If you are working a Summer or Winter season with us, we provide staff accommodation on a shared basis, which means your bed will be assigned by your manager – think of it as a surprise! You'll be sharing with fellow staff, either from your department or any other department.

We’ve got the basics covered, hot water, bed linen, towels and WIFI. You don’t have to worry about bills for the duration of your contract. If you want to make your space feel like home, feel free to bring your own bedding, photos, or buy some extras when you arrive to save on luggage space. You and your roommates can team up to buy the essentials like toilet roll, hand soap, shower gel, cleaning supplies and washing powder, or go solo – the choice is yours!

Since each resort has its own unique set up, we can’t give you the specifics until you know where you’re based. But, if you're lucky enough to work a summer season in one of our Beach Clubs, you’ll get access to video tours of staff accommodations and more information on what we provide to help you prep and pack.

It might not be a five-star hotel, but it’s everything you need to have an unforgettable summer working abroad!

We’ve got you covered when it comes to staff meals – we provide food for all staff working in our Beach Clubs, 3 meals a day when you are working. We do our best to cater for everyone. But let’s be honest, it’s a bit of a juggling act, so there are a few limits to what we can offer. If you’ve got an allergy or intolerance, just let your line manager know, and we’ll make sure you’re sorted. However, if it’s a dietary preference or lifestyle choice, we can’t always meet these requests – we’re not miracle workers!

You will be provided with healthy, fresh, and balanced meals to fuel you through your day and remember you will be abroad, and it will mostly be local cuisine served in the staff area. But hey, if staff food isn’t quite hitting the spot, you’re free to eat out or bring something in with you. In fact, many staff like to enjoy meals outside the resort at local dining spots. So, while we’ll keep you well-fed, we know everyone has different tastes and preferences, so we don’t expect you to only eat at staff food.

Applying to Work for Neilson

We will review your application, and if successful, you will be invited to complete a one-way video interview. This will be your time to shine and bring your application to life.

Our response times may vary depending on where we are in our recruitment cycle. We open applications for the coming seasons around six months before we need people in resort; therefore, if you are applying early doors, it may take some time to hear back from us.

We will do our best to provide general updates along the way, but it's virtually impossible to give a specific timeframe for processing applications.

Once you have submitted your application, we encourage you to look around your profile on the Neilson Recruitment Hub. Your profile is a great way to enhance your application and keep your details fresh. We encourage you to complete as much of your profile as you can, with particular focus on the portfolio and availability sections.

Absolutely, you’re welcome to apply! While we’d love to have you on board, it's important to note that depending on the role and the demand, we can’t always guarantee a shorter contract. We tend to favour full-season staff to ensure consistency.

But don’t let that put you off—if you’re available for part of the season, it’s worth applying, and who knows? We may have something that works for both of us!

Minimum Age Requirement - To legally work for Neilson, you MUST be 18 years old on or before the date you are available to start work.

Multiple Applications - Please avoid submitting multiple applications - We ask that you only apply for the job you are most suited. Please ensure you tell us about any qualifications you hold that are relevant to any Neilson jobs. You will have the opportunity to tell us about other roles you might be suitable for later in the process.

UK and EU Passport Holders - Neilson is a UK-based business operating within the EU. If you hold a valid UK or EU passport, we can apply for any required visas and work permits, allowing you to work legally in the EU.

Non-EU passport holders (excluding the UK) - Unfortunately, unless you already have the right to work in one of the countries we operate (i.e. through residency or required permit for that country), we cannot obtain the required visa and work permit for non-EU passport holders to legally work in the countries we operate.

Just find the job you are interested in applying for on this site, make sure you have read through the full job description and criteria thoroughly, then click on Apply Now.

WINTER APPLICATIONS
Ordinarily, we open applications for the winter season in June/July.

SUMMER APPLICATIONS
We will usually open the summer season applications in December

In both cases, keep a close eye here and via our social pages where we’ll advertise all roles as they become available.

For anyone applying as a couple, it’s important to note that this is only something we can consider when both of you have the required skills and qualifications for the job you are applying. You will find a specific area in the application covering this and both of you will need to follow the process.

We treat all applicants as individuals, and our jobs are offered based on suitability for that particular role. We cannot offer you a job simply because this is something you want to do or because you are with someone who already has the skills and experience required. You will both need to pass the interview process successfully, and we will need a job available.

We want our staff to be happy and will do our best to accommodate personal requests wherever possible; however, this can’t be guaranteed. We must place our staff in line with the needs of the business. Living together will come down to resort logistics and the availability of rooms.

PLEASE NOTE – NEILSON PROVIDE STAFF ACCOMMODATION ON A SHARED BASIS.

Other

It can be done! Family and friends can send you care packages, gifts, or anything you might have forgotten (who doesn’t leave something behind, right?). You will need to provide them with the Beach Club address and make sure they address it to you and also include your department.

However, since Brexit, shipping items from the UK to Europe is a bit trickier due to customs regulations. This means packages may be subject to delays, additional fees, and customs checks. Make sure your sender is aware of the current rules, and it’s always a good idea to check with local customs for any restrictions or charges that may apply.

While receiving post is still possible, just keep in mind it might take a little longer to arrive than you’re used to and you will pay the customs charges upon it's arrival!

Yes, there is a friends and family discount, but it’s only for your close friends and family. Just a heads-up, details of the discount can change at any time, so make sure you check the most up-to-date info when you get your onboarding details. You’ll only be able to offer the discount while you’re actively employed, and there are a few specific requirements to use it.

To use the discount, your friend or family member will need your payroll number and must call Neilson head office to make their booking.

Please note; friends of staff discount can only be applied to new bookings—it can’t be added to any existing ones.

Your Neilson uniform will be ready for you when you arrive at the resort! There are a few items you’ll need to provide yourself, so make sure to check out the Uniform Guidelines for your role. You can find these on Cezanne once you're placed in the orange room or after receiving your contract.

We typically provide Neilson Active Tops/Vests or Hospitality Polo Shirts, a comfy Neilson jumper, a rain jacket, and a stylish Neilson hat/cap. As for boardshorts, footwear, and activity-specific gear, these are more personal choices, but just make sure to stick to our uniform standards for a polished look!

We’re not interested in people who want to stare at their phones all day. Neilson is in the business of delivering fantastic holidays, so the ability to display the following characteristics is essential.

You must be:

  • Outgoing with a great sense of humour, work ethic and attitude.
  • Likeable, charismatic and able to bring your individual magic to the team.
  • Able to bring out the best in others.
  • Caring with a contagious personality and tonnes of good energy.
  • Willing to learn, develop your skills, and share your expertise.
  • Honest, genuine and kind-hearted with a friendly, helpful nature.
  • A grafter! Someone who’s not scared of hard work and always ready to roll up your sleeves to get stuck in.
  • Always strive to be the best and to have fun while you do it
  • Happy to take ownership of your responsibilities and to get the job done right every time.
  • Conscientious, a problem solver with good common sense.
  • Able to do the right thing and always willing to ask when unsure.
  • Punctual, accountable, and sensible when required.
  • Well-mannered, willing and able with a positive outlook on life.
  • Happy to play your part in creating an unparalleled holiday experience for our guests.

Travel to Resort

We cannot always fly you to your preferred airport. If your flight is within 100 miles, it is still your responsibility to arrange your own travel to and from the airport, regardless of the departure or arrival time.

If we need to fly you from or to an airport that’s more than 100 miles away from your preferred airport (as stated in your travel preferences), we’ll arrange connecting travel for you. This could be a flight, coach, train, or hotel, depending on the situation.

Please note, this isn’t a door-to-door service, so connecting travel will be arranged from the nearest pick-up point to your preferred airport. Unfortunately, we’re unable to cover petrol expenses.

You don’t need to notify us if your preferences meet the criteria for connecting travel – we’ll already have that covered based on the information you provide. Just be sure to carefully read your travel confirmation email for any details on connecting travel we’ve arranged for you.

If your circumstances change, you can update your travel preferences on Cezanne. We ask that you do this as soon as you know about any changes, as staff flights are booked based on your preferences.

Once your flights are booked, we won't be able to make any adjustments, so it’s important to keep your details up to date as soon as possible!

As part of the Neilson package, we cover the cost of flights to the resort from the UK and Europe. If you're outside of these regions, you’ll need to make your own way to the resort. Don’t worry though, we can help you out with any info you need to make the journey as smooth as possible.

No stress—getting to the resort is all sorted! The resort team will have your flight details and will arrange your transfer. Whether it’s a friendly face from the team picking you up, a seat on a guest transfer, or a taxi driver with a Neilson sign and your name on it, you’re covered.

If you don’t spot someone straight away, don’t panic—they could be running a bit late (seasons are busy!). If you’re feeling unsure, just call or message your line manager when you arrive, and they’ll get it all sorted. Once you get to the resort, you’ll be greeted by a Manager who will get you all settled in!

Summer

Absolutely! If you're passionate about your sport and want to bring your own gear, go for it! Whether it’s wing foils, windsurfing, bikes, wakeboards, skateboards, or any other gear, we’ve seen staff bring their own equipment with them to enjoy their favourite activities on their own terms. Remember you will have access to the resort equipment if you don't bring your own.

Just keep in mind, you'll need to cover the cost of transporting it on your flight. And, don’t forget to give your Line Manager a heads-up if you need extra space for your equipment during the transfer to the resort – they'll help you sort it out.

If you are a Bike Guide, we will cover the cost of taking your bike on a flight. You must ensure that you have selected “YES” on your travel preferences under the bike carriage section if you want this added. If you are not a bike guide and wish to take your bike on a season, you must add bike carriage to your booking at your own cost. This can be done online through the manage my booking option.

However, some airlines have strict guidelines on this service, and some may not offer it, so always check and pre-book it. Don’t risk just turning up with sports equipment and hoping for the best!

Think carefully as to whether you need your own equipment on your season. Storage will be limited in your staff accommodation, and you must consider the space you share with your roommates.

WINTER

We will book ski/snowboard carriage on your behalf if you have selected ‘YES’ on your travel preferences. A £40 deduction will be made on your first and last pay to cover the cost of ski/snowboard carriage.

If your flight has already been booked without carriage, and you wish to add this on, you must contact the airline directly (either through the manage my booking or by calling them) to add it on.

If you came out without equipment but have treated yourself to some new snazzy gear and need to get it home. Please make sure you update your travel preferences so that we can add them for you. Otherwise, you will need to add it yourself, as previously explained.

Think carefully as to whether you need your own equipment on your season. Storage will be limited in your staff accommodation, and you must consider the space you share with your roommates.

If you wish to drive out to your resort or book your own travel, then you must make sure that you have selected the 'driving to resort' option on your travel preferences.

By selecting this option, the People Team will not book any travel on your behalf. You must ensure you arrive in your resort by your contract start date.

We recognise that having your vehicle in your resort is a big bonus; however, with Brexit's impact, it has become more complicated than ever before to have a car in the EU for an extended period.

You are responsible for planning all elements of your journey. This includes ensuring you have followed all the driving regulations and requirements for each country you are travelling through. As the UK is no longer part of the European Union, you must ensure you have completed all of the legal requirements for taking a vehicle overseas.

By opting to drive to the resort, Neilson will contribute £125 each way to your journey. Your outward journey contribution will be paid into your first pay packet, and your return journey contribution will be paid into your final pay packet.

If you need to change your resort for any reason throughout the season and need to drive between resorts, you will be expected to take the journey time as unpaid leave/holiday. You will receive a £125 contribution for this journey.

Also, you must let your Line Manager know, and stay in touch throughout your trip so they know when to expect you.

Take care of your car – check the service and that your MOT will be valid for the whole trip. You must confirm parking details with your manager, you might not be able to park at resort or at your accommodation as a standard.

Finally, we ask that you arrive at a reasonable hour, so you’re well-rested and ready to start work the next day. Safe travels!

Yes, you can! Be sure to set your travel preferences on Cezanne so we don't book you a flight by accident. You will be given a travel allowance of £125 each way.

Just be sure to inform your line manager in advance and keep them updated on your arrival as they will need to prepare for your arrival. If your plans change or there are delays make sure you keep your line manager in the loop.

We ask that you arrive at a reasonable hour, so you’re well-rested and ready to start work the next day.

Safe travels!

The weight allowance for hold luggage depends on the airline carrier, but it’s typically around 20kg as standard.

If you’re planning to pack a little more or want some extra space, you can always add another bag for an additional cost.

Important note: If one bag weighs more than 32 kg, most airlines will not take it.

Think carefully as to whether you desperately need that extra bag. Storage will be limited in your staff accommodation, and you must consider the space you share with your roommates.

 Happy packing!

Visas

If you are going to be working in Greece, you must submit your passport to the embassy before your appointment. Therefore, you will be required to be in the UK whilst this process is happening. We will advise you at the time of going through the visa process how long this part will approximately take as it can vary, depending on how busy the visa office is.

If you are unable to return to the UK to complete this part of the process before you contracted start date, then you MUST notify us immediately as we would need to amend your start date.

Unfortunately, we may not always be able to make an amendment to your start date, so you will need to make the decision as to whether you can return to the UK in order to start on your original date, or whether you will need to decline the job offer.

If you are working in Croatia, everything you need to do beforehand can be completed online. You will complete the work permit process once you arrive in Croatia.

As much as we’d like to say yes, unfortunately the issuing of visas and permits sits strictly with the Embassy(s).

We have worked incredibly hard to understand the process and have developed working relationships with the issuing offices so that we can provide as much guidance and support to you as you go through the process. However, it’s ultimately down to you to make sure you are dotting every ‘i’, crossing every ‘t’ and following the instructions to ensure you are handing over the correct information in your applications.

If your application is rejected, then we may have to retract your offer of employment.

Good news! If you're eligible for a visa, we've got you covered! We'll handle the cost and give you all the info you need to go through the visa process. However, we do need your help to make sure everything goes smoothly. You must follow the instructions you receive and complete any required steps as quickly as possible. Simple, right?

One important note: if you resign or are dismissed from your position, you’ll be responsible for the work permit costs.

Training & Development

The type of training you’ll receive depends on when you arrive in the season. If you're lucky enough to land before the guests arrive and help set up, you'll join our Induction Week alongside other new and returning staff. This is where you’ll learn all about Neilson, resort expectations, and the key compliance stuff to keep everything running safely and smoothly. You’ll also get a practical run-through of resort operations and then dive into departmental training with your team.

If you arrive later in the season, we’ll still make sure you’re well-prepared. While we can’t dedicate a full week only to training, you'll get lots of face-to-face time with your line manager and/or supervisor. Expect to hit the ground running – your first week or two might feel fast-paced, and you’ll be learning as you go, but we’ll do our best to pair you up with an experienced teammate to help you learn from and settle in.

Pro tip: The more you’ve prepared with your online training and blueprints before you arrive, the more you’ll get out of the in-person sessions. So, bring your confidence, common sense, and eagerness to learn – we’ll support you every step of the way!

We aim to give you access to your online training about 4 weeks before your travel date. When you receive the email, we recommend having a look through it so you can get a sense of how much time you’ll need to complete everything. It’s best to have it all done before you arrive, so you can hit the ground running!

We’ve got you covered with some comprehensive online training via our platform, Litmos. It’s designed to be user-friendly and broken down into small chunks, so you can work through it all at once or in stages—whatever works best for you. We’ll cover essential compliance (you might already be familiar with some of it, but we’ll make sure everyone’s on the same page), plus health and safety training specific to your department. You’ll also get an introduction to your role, so you’re prepped for what’s to come when you get to resort!

Additionally, we have our operating procedures, known as Blueprints. It’s important that you read through both the hotel section and your role section before you arrive. These are the procedures we follow in resort, and having them under your belt will make your in-person training much easier to follow, as they’ll be referred to throughout.

Our people are the backbone and the future of our business. Therefore, we’ll always ensure that our staff receive comprehensive and ongoing training.

As a business, we must ensure that our team is equipped to exceed guest expectations and meet all our legal requirements.

We’ll help you develop within the team, teach you new skills, and provide a springboard to follow in the footsteps of many Neilson managers who have successfully worked up the ranks.

Former Bike Guides are now in charge of the largest hotels in our programme and former Watersports Instructors, who are now the boardroom masterminds behind our product.

If you’re willing to work and thrive under pressure, you’re in for a challenging but rewarding career with Neilson!

Qualifications

We appreciate that there is a cost to obtaining a first aid certificate, therefore we are happy to accept applications without a first aid certificate as long as you complete an appropriate course on acceptance of any potential job offer.

Please note: Some of our job roles require a more enhanced first aid certification. Please refer to the job description if you are unsure.

GENERAL FIRST AID

During the summer, all active overseas staff need to be first aid trained. You’ll, therefore, need to enrol onto a certified First Aid course available in your area. This course should be no less than a 6hr practical course.

A First Aid certificate tends to be valid for three years, so if you’re already qualified, please make sure that your certificate will remain valid for the duration of your contract. There are plenty of companies offering first aid courses, so a simple google search should bring up the available courses near you.

CHILDREN’S CLUB FIRST AID

If you are working in the Children’s Club, ideally, we would prefer that you obtain a 1-day paediatric first aid certification; however, this is not essential, and a standard 1-day first aid certification would otherwise be acceptable.

BEACH STAFF FIRST AID

As a staff member working on the beach, you will need a course that covers the RYA first aid requirements. Visit the RYA website to find out exactly what cover you require.

ACTIVE TEAM FIRST AID

All members of the Active Team require a standard ‘First Aid At Work’ certificate. This includes Lifeguard/Swim Coaches, Tennis/Fitness Instructors and Bike Guides.

WINTER TEAM FIRST AID

Unless you’re working in the Children’s Club Team, it’s not compulsory to hold a First Aid certificate for a winter season; however, it would always be beneficial.

You’ll find information about all of our positions within each relevant job description. The full job description & criteria link will give you a full run down of what qualifications you need for each job role.

Be sure to read the job description thoroughly to ensure that you are applying for the most suitable role before proceeding.

Holiday & Day's Off

Booking your annual leave is easy – just make your request through your rota system, Planday. However, please note that your Line Manager will need to approve your request before you can confirm any time off, so it’s important to get their approval first.

We recommend putting in your holiday request as soon as you know when you’d like to take time off. This helps us plan ahead and increases your chances of getting the dates you want. Because we’re a holiday company, there are busier periods where we can’t always grant leave – especially during peak season. Our main priority is to meet the needs of the business, and securing external cover for holidays can sometimes be tricky.

The earlier you request, the more likely we can accommodate your plans, so make sure to get those dates in early!

You definitely can, but just a friendly reminder—you’re still staff, so the same rules apply, even on your day off!

We’d recommend using your free time to explore new places or take a breather from being guest-facing. However, if the wind’s perfect for a bit of sailing/windsurfing or you’re keen for a bike ride, we totally understand that you might pop into the resort to enjoy those activities!

Yes, of course! We just ask that, out of courtesy, you inform the Activity/Operations Manager of the other resort so they know you’ll be coming.

They might even be able to give you a heads-up on things like wind conditions or how busy the resort is that day. While you're there enjoying your day off, please remember that you're still representing the company, so always keep that in mind!

Yes, you can! If you're looking to stay at another Neilson Beach Club, you’ll need to reach out to the Guest Service Manager or Front of House Manager at that resort to check if there’s availability. However, please note that availability won’t be confirmed until closer to your desired dates, as we can’t block off rooms that might be booked by guests. The resort will confirm the price for staff and what it includes.

We ask that, while enjoying your time off at another resort, you remember that you’re still representing the company. You’ll be paying a significantly reduced rate, so guests will always be our priority. Enjoy your time away, but keep in mind that you're still part of the Neilson family!

Hiring a car locally is usually pretty easy, either directly from the Beach Club reception or from a local rental company. If you’re planning to hire one, just make sure to bring your driving license with you. It’s always good practice to take photos of the car before you drive off to document any existing damage, and be sure to check with the rental company about insurance coverage.

In Europe, car hire insurance typically includes basic coverage, but we strongly recommend opting for additional coverage or checking if your personal insurance or credit card offers any protection.

For rentals in Croatia, Greece, and Sardinia, the usual age restrictions are:

  • You generally need to be at least 21.
  • You may face a young driver surcharge if you are under 25.

Each country may have slight variations depending on the rental company, so always double-check the details when booking. Depending on the company or location you may get a reduced rate for being staff, so it is always worth checking!

A Note on Mopeds and Quad Bikes:

While it might sound tempting to hire a moped or quad bike to explore the area, we want to highlight the dangers associated with these types of vehicles. They can be extremely risky, especially for inexperienced riders, and accidents involving mopeds and quad bikes can be much more severe than accidents in cars.

Due to safety concerns, we strongly advise against hiring/driving or accepting lifts on mopeds and quad bikes, and as a company, we ask that our staff refrain from doing so. Your safety is our top priority, and we want you to have an amazing season, and explore in the safest way possible. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to speak to your line manager.

You’ll get one glorious day off a week, selected by your line manager, but remember – in the world of seasons, flexibility is key! There’s a chance your "day of freedom" might come after you've worked a 9 or 10-day streak, so don’t get too attached to the idea of a regular weekend. Your specific day off depends on the department you’re in – no one said life on season is predictable!

As for holidays, you accrue paid holiday days while you work, but don't forget to request these early on with your line manager when you're in resort. They decide if your holiday request gets the green light. On the bright side, you might get allocated some downtime when it’s quiet, but just so you know, it’ll come out of your holiday allowance. While you’re encouraged to request it, you won’t always get to pick the timing. So, when the resort is calm, your line manager might rota you some days off, whether you're ready for it or not.

Pay & Working Hours

Most importantly start by checking your payslip on your Epayslip account – most questions can be answered by taking a quick look at it. If something still doesn’t seem right or you don't understand it, have a chat with your line Manager or a senior Manager in resort.

If it’s still unresolved, feel free to reach out to our payroll team. Please keep in mind that it’s a small team, so if you do need to contact them directly, a friendly message goes a long way. They’ll be happy to help you sort things out!

You'll receive an email with a link to set up your Epayslips account. Simply follow the link and complete your registration to gain access.

From there, you can view your payslips each month, keeping everything nice and organised in one place. It’s super simple – just make sure to check your inbox for the email when it arrives!

You’ll be paid on the 3rd of each month.  Just make sure your bank details are up to date with us, and we’ll make sure your payment arrives smoothly.

As a Neilson team member, flexibility is key—it's a lifestyle, not a 9-to-5! We’ll always aim to keep the hours manageable, but be prepared to put in some extra effort, especially when things get busy. It’s all part of the fun and excitement of the role!

The hours you work will depend on the needs of the business, which can sometimes mean more than 55 hours a week. There will be times, particularly at the start of the season, when you’ll need to work more as you get settled into your role. You’ll also be expected to work 6 days a week.

Preparing to Work Abroad

For travel from the UK to Europe your passport should generally be valid for at least three months beyond your planned return date. Some countries may require a longer validity period, so it’s always a good idea to check the specific entry requirements of the country you will be working in. You can check this on the government website, here

Make sure to check your passport’s expiry date well in advance to avoid any last-minute surprises – it’s always better to be prepared!

It depends on your mobile provider and plan. Since the end of 2021, many UK networks have reintroduced roaming charges for travel within the EU, meaning you may face additional fees for using your phone abroad. Be sure to check with your provider before you go to find out if your plan includes free roaming in Europe or if you’ll incur extra charges.

If roaming charges apply, you could consider getting a local SIM card, or if your phone is compatible get an eSIM. They allow you to switch networks without needing a physical SIM card. There are reputable online providers such as Airalo or Nomad that offer affordable data plans for travel across Europe.

If you want to avoid any surprises with roaming fees, it’s worth exploring travel-specific SIM cards or eSIM data plans, which can save you money on data usage, calls, and texts while abroad.

Before you travel, it’s a good idea to check with your bank about any potential charges. Specifically, you should ask if you can withdraw cash (yes, cash is still needed in some places in Europe!) and if you can make Point of Sale (POS) transactions without any extra fees.

If your UK bank does charge extra fees, there are plenty of online banks set up specifically for travellers and seasonnaires that don’t charge fees, two main ones are Monzo and Revolut. The Post Office also offer travel money cards, which are pre paid currency cards, which is another option worth considering.

So, a little research can help you avoid unnecessary fees!

It's also a smart idea to notify your bank that you'll be abroad and for how long. This helps prevent them from accidentally placing a temporary block on your card. Plus, if they notice any unusual activity on your card in the UK, they’ll be able to flag it more quickly.

Packing for a whole summer season can feel like a challenge, especially when you're trying to fit up to six months' worth of gear and essentials into one suitcase! While we all wish we had unlimited luggage space, the reality is that you'll need to pack efficiently to make sure you’ve got everything you need, but without overstuffing your suitcase.

You also won't have unlimited storage in your accommodation when you arrive and you need to be considerate of your room mates!

Here are a few packing tips to help you stay organised:

  • Be Selective with Clothing: Pack versatile items that you can mix and match. You will have laundry facilities, so don't bring a different outfit for everyday of the week. Remember you will also be wearing your uniform 6 days a week. You'll just need something casual to walk to and from work in.
  • Roll, Don’t Fold: Rolling clothes can save space and help prevent wrinkles. You can also use packing cubes to keep everything organised and easily accessible.
  • Don’t Overpack Toiletries: You’ll likely be able to buy toiletries locally, so there’s no need to bring an entire six-month supply. However, keep in mind that some local stores might not carry your favourite brands, so if you’re loyal to a specific product, it’s a good idea to bring a backup supply just in case. Staff usually buy toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and hand soap locally.
  • Limit Heavy Items: Try to minimise bulky items like extra shoes, heavy towels, or non-essential tech gadgets. You’ll find that you don't actually need that much stuff!
  • Bulky Clothing and Shoes: Wear your bulkier items to travel in, jeans, jumper, coat and trainers!
  • Use Space-Saving Bags: Vacuum-seal bags or compression bags can help you make the most of your suitcase space, especially when it comes to bulkier items like jackets or activewear. But consider that you might not have a way of re vacuuming the bags when you leave.

Packing a 20kg bag for an entire season can be challenging. Think twice about how essential your essentials are and avoid being stung for a small fortune at the airport if your luggage is overweight.

Here are some ideas of what we think class as essential:

Activity WEAR & Gear
  • Swimwear: You’ll most likely be in the water a lot, so pack a couple of swimsuits, bikinis and boardshorts. You need to supply your own black boardshorts for work, so it is good to have at least 3 pairs!!
  • Rash Vests/Waterproof Tops: These are ideal for windsurfing, sailing, or other water activities to keep you comfortable and sun-safe.
  • Quick-Dry Activewear: Lightweight and breathable sportswear for fitness classes, hiking, or water sports.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated, and it’s better for the environment. There are filtered water refill stations around resort. It is a good idea to bring an insulated Chilly's style bottle so it stays cold.
  • Waterproof Watch: Working on season you will realise you will always need to know the time and you won't be on your phone all the time to check!!

Footwear
  • Trainers: Comfortable shoes for fitness and walking.
  • Flip Flops/Crocs: Waterproof footwear for wearing at work, you must wear footwear around resort. Even if you enjoy being barefoot, keep this for the beach!

Sun Protection
  • Sunscreen: High SPF is essential – and remember to reapply, especially after being in the water.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the Mediterranean sun. Polarised lenses are great for outdoor activities.
  • Hat/Cap: A wide-brimmed hat or cap will help protect your face from the sun.

Clothing
  • Comfortable Clothes: Think lightweight, breathable options for your days off – shorts, T-shirts, and easy dresses. A season with Neilson is by no means a formal affair! The general dress code is laid back and casual. However, there is the odd occasion when people throw on something a little fancier (such as end-of-season awards or a staff jolly).
  • Warm Gear: At the start and end of season, it can be chilly!! It feels even colder when you have been used to 35+ degrees in August, that by the time September/October comes around, you will want a warm jumper, a hoody, tracksuit bottoms and jeans. Black leggings/black tracksuit bottoms can also be worn by childcare staff if they are working in the evening and it is cold.
  • Waterproof Jacket: Be prepared for some impressive Mediterranean storms during your season. Not only are they spectacular, but they are also very, very wet!

Electricals
  • Phone & Charger: Obviously, you’ll need your phone to stay connected. Consider a portable charger for those long days when you’re on the go.
  • Adapter/Converter: Greece, Sardinia, and Croatia use the European two-pin plug, so bring an adapter for your UK plugs. You could also bring a multi-plug to have more outlets!
  • Laptop/Tablet: If you like to watch movies, work on your hobbies, or stay connected to family and friends, these can come in handy for your downtime.
  • Headphones: For music, podcasts, or just some quiet time.
  • Camera/GoPro: Capture all the memories of your adventures.
  • Hairdryer/Styling Tools: Just check the voltage when bringing electrical items from the UK!
  • E-Reader: Saves more space than bringing books!

Self care
  • Shampoo/Conditioner: You can buy this locally but if you have a preferred brand maybe bring it with you.
  • Toothbrush/Toothpaste: Self-explanatory, but don’t forget to bring along any extras like floss or mouthwash if you use them.
  • Deodorant: Stay fresh during long days in the sun! This is very important, even if you don't usually need it, you will when working in the summer.
  • Skincare: Sunscreen, after-sun, moisturiser, and anything else you need to keep your skin in tip-top shape.
  • Hairbrush: For those moments when you’re not rocking the “windswept beach look.”
  • Medications: Bring any prescription meds you need.
  • Condoms: No explanation needed, use them!
  • Electrolytes/Berocca: Always useful when you are in a hot country!

Optional Extras
  • Travel Journal: If you’re into journaling, it’s a lovely way to capture all your adventures throughout the season.
  • Snacks/Food Items: A few of your favourite snacks can help when you need a little pick-me-up during your breaks. Marmite is always a popular thing to bring, it is hard to get in some places!
  • Photos: To stick up in your staff accommodation.
  • A Lightweight throw: To put on your bed to make it feel more homely.

If you are a UK resident we provide you with travel insurance for the duration of your contract, you will be sent the details of what it covers, then you can decide whether you want/need more cover. It might depend on if you plan on bringing out expensive kit/items or what activities you plan on doing outside of work.

UK citizens should apply for a GHIC and make sure you bring it with you, it is a good idea to have a photo of it on your phone as this will be easier if you need medical attention in an emergency. EU Citizens should apply for an EHIC card. This card will allow access to state healthcare, if required.

You can apply for your GHIC here, allow three weeks for your application to be processed and for your card to arrive.

In Resort

Yes, absolutely! You can order online and have your items delivered. Just keep in mind that in some smaller villages, addresses can be a bit confusing. It’s best to have your packages delivered to the Beach Club with your name and department on the label so reception knows who it’s for. Your line Manager can provide you with the Beach Club address.

Many of our staff order online, everything from clothes, craft supplies to accommodation decoration extras, and there are plenty of European websites for popular brands and shops, think zara.gr and amazon.de. This can save you from high delivery costs, long shipping times, and expensive customs charges – win-win!

Absolutely – your well-being is a top priority for us, and we understand that being on a season is not always easy. We’ve got several support systems in place to ensure you feel supported throughout your season.

External Support

We offer a confidential, anonymous, and professional 24-hour helpline through CCP. Whether you’re at the resort or back in the UK, you can reach out anytime for support with anything you’re going through.

  • From overseas: +44 1756 611511
  • From the UK: 0800 005 3700
  • Alternatively, you can email: online@ccpsupport.co.uk (just remember to mention that you work for Neilson Active Holidays in your email).

Managers in Resort

Your resort managers are always there for you, whether you need guidance, assistance, or just someone to talk to. They’re your first point of contact and can help you with any concerns you may have during the season.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Guide

We provide a specific mental health and wellbeing guide tailored to life on season. It’s packed with tips and resources to help you maintain a positive mindset and stay balanced, no matter what challenges the season may bring.

The People Team in the UK

If you need any additional support or have any issues regarding your employment and welfare in the resort that you don’t feel like you can discuss with your manager our HR team back in the UK is always available to assist you with any work-related concerns or personal matters.

As part of the Neilson team you get up to 40% discount on food, beverages and spa treatments.

We simply ask that you pay your bar tab off each month and don't exceed the limit set in your resort (usually around 150€/month).

You may also receive a discount of varying degree at your resort shop!

Bar tabs are considered a privilege and can be taken away if abused. This discount is for you to use only.

If you've got some downtime on your break, or in between shifts we ask that you are mindful of the way you conduct yourself around resort. Please always wear clothing, unless you are in the sea or the pool, use appropriate language and conversations should be guest appropriate.

As always, guests come first so here are the guidelines we set out regarding the hotel facilities.

Your manager will explain these in full, with any resort specifics once you arrive, but just to set the scene...

Bar

You're welcome to take advantage of your staff discount at our hotel bars, but please follow these guidelines:

  • Stay in small groups and move away from the bar quickly
  • Always allow guests to be served before you
  • Avoid taking prime seating spots and do not move the furniture around

Restaurant

Guest's are welcome to invite you for dinner in the restaurant, and if you have friends or family staying at the Beach Club, you may want to eat with them too. In general, you'll need to book your spot in the restaurant and spaces will be limited to a few staff members per night.

Other than these times, staff are not permitted to eat in the guest restaurant.

Pool

In most resorts, you can use the pool for swimming lengths. We ask that once you're finished, that you move away from the pool as it's a prime location in resort that is always popular. Staff are not permitted to use the sun beds around the pool area.

Beach Sun beds and Sea Swimming

As with the pool sun beds, the same applies down the beach as they are always very popular with our guests. However, some resorts will have a spot that staff can use that is away from the main area - please check with your manager. This probably won't be the case in smaller resorts.

If you would like to swim in the sea, please stick to the marked swimming areas and follow any instructions from the beach team when required.

Spa

We'd love you to take advantage of your staff discount and treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment! Speak to your spa manager in resort for how to book.

If you spa has additional facilities, like sauna's and Jacuzzi's, you may be permitted to use this at certain times. This will be at the discretion of the Spa Manager, so again make sure you check what the deal is in your resort.

Absolutely, we encourage staff to get involved! Whether you’ve got a long lunch break, a morning off, or holiday with no plans, it’s a great way to stay active and even learn a new skill. We know it might be tempting to just relax, but getting involved in activities is an excellent way to boost your energy levels and avoid that mid-afternoon or mid-season slump. Plus, the season will fly by, so make the most of having access to the kit and activities while you're there!

However, there are a few rules to follow. When using the kit or joining a session, you'll need to follow the same guidelines as guests. For example, you can’t be windsurfing outside the designated sailing area just because you're staff – we need to keep it fair for everyone! Also, guests will always get priority over equipment and spaces in sessions. If you’d like to use any equipment or join a session, be sure to check with the head of department first to make sure it’s okay.

In some cases, your line manager or senior manager might organise a special staff outing, like an after-hours bike ride or sunset paddleboarding session, but these are only allowed when authorised. So, while we love seeing staff make the most of the activities, you can't just grab the kit and head out whenever you feel like it! Also, you can't take Neilson kit offsite (unless you’re riding a guest bike), and you can’t take Neilson equipment home to your accommodation.

Some staff prefer a bit more flexibility with kit, which is why some bring their own equipment. If that’s something you're interested in, you can find more info on how to do this in the Travelling to Resort section of our FAQs.

Some resorts are lucky enough to have a gym, speak with your resort managers and fitness instructors to confirm when/how it is available to you.

Our Beach Clubs and their facilities are reserved for Neilson guests only, but we get it—you’ll probably want to show off your amazing workplace! If you want to give your family or friends a little tour, just let your Activity/Operations Manager know in advance, and it shouldn’t be an issue.

However, due to insurance reasons and kit availability, only guests and staff can get hands-on with the equipment or use the resort facilities.
